Facts to Know Before Buying Quadcopters and Drones

Quadcopters

Quadcopters are defined as a rotorcraft having two rotors turning clockwise and two rotors turning counter-clockwise. They are also called as quad-rotor helicopter or quadrotor. The rotors on the quadcopter each consist of a propeller motor.

Quadcopters are remotely controlled instead of being controlled by a pre-programmed onboard computer, and they balance themselves by the movement of the blades and not by the use of a tail rotor.

Drones With Camera

Drones are flying robots which are referred to as modern unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems (UASes).  They are simply referred as aircraft without a human pilot aboard and which looks like a helicopter or a small airplane. They are used to take coverage of human/natural activities from the place where it is difficult to reach.

1. Working on Drones

The Drones are controlled autonomously by onboard computers, or remotely controlled by the pilot from somewhere else. The Drones fly long periods of time and they are engine controlled.

These Drones are multi-rotor radio controlled aircraft that have intelligent flight control and/or first person view (FPV) control which allows the craft to be flown out of direct sight of the operator. In terms, they are controlled autonomously by onboard computers, or remotely controlled by the pilot from somewhere else through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with on-board sensors and GPS (Global Positioning System).

2. Storing of Images in Drones

Drones with a camera are used to record the views captured by them. The drones have built-in SD (Secure Digital) card for the purpose of saving and storing pictures and footage from all flights, which will be uploaded onto a laptop or PC and can be watched and shared directly from it.

Some of the basic types of Drones:

1. Professional Drones with Cameras

Professional drones with cameras are of high quality. They are professional in both the camera and the drone being high tech in accordance with the design.

These types of Drones are used for commercial reasons to record clips for an advertisement or a picture for their business profile, and/or for residential fliers who want the best camera drone on the market. They assure perfect stability for aerial photography and videography purposes through the gimbal and gyro axis.

2. Toy Drones with Cameras

Toy drones are mostly aimed at kids who are either just starting out with drones, and even adults who want a smaller, cheaper, easier drone to fly for their collection or whatever the case may be.

These types of drones are used for recreational and hobby purposes and are less professional and more for fun. They are very cheap and are made for both indoor and outdoor use depending on the brand and manufacturer.

3. FPV Drones with Cameras

FPV is a short form for “ the first-person video”. They are paired with a drone to get a remote-controlled aircraft to the view point from the air. They are also called as UAVs.

These types of drones are relatively popular with those who would rather get the best in-flight experience possible. These drones are mostly used for the race and go through hoops.

4. Micro-Drones with Cameras

Microdrones is called as MAV (Micro Air Vehicle). These drones are smaller is the size that tends to focus more on the flight aspects instead of the camera.

Are Drones And Quadcopters The Same?

Not rated yet

Most of the case people may think that Drones and Quadcopters are the same things, and the marker may view the Drones as expensive devices and Quadcopters as cheaper toys. But in fact, the Drones are any Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, while Quadcopters are any Drones controlled by four motors.

Differences between Drones and Quadcopters:

Drones are used in conducting aerial surveying, and for taking photographs and films for activities that require record keeping such as sports and movies. Most importantly, they are used by law enforcement agencies of the state to conduct a search that is different from those of military surveillance and is used by authorities to track the progress of dangerous weather outcomes like a hurricane.

But, Quadcopters are used mainly for recreational activities, and for some of the civil operations with limitations to their use. The Quadcopters are just designed for the satisfaction of recreational purpose, and not for any surveillance activities.

Are Quadcopters legal and safe?

Not rated yet

Quadcopters have rules that guide how and when the quadcopters can be used. For example, the Quadcopters are not allowed to fly near airports and must stay below 400 feet.

Aerial Filming and Privacy: The right to privacy is not mentioned in the Constitution, but the Supreme Court has announced that several of the amendments create a right to privacy. Many states have laws or legal precedents granting a right to privacy. A right to privacy is described as that a person, their home or property should not be filmed without the person knowledge. So video graphing or filming without permissions from the person are said to be illegal as per law.

States like Texas passes bills as Texas House Bill # 912 to ban any aerial filming from remote controlled aircraft. Also for states like Oregon similar laws are being debated.

Some of the rules for flying Quadcopters:

  • You should not fly Quad copters above 400 feet.
  • You should not fly Quad copters above a populated area.
  • You should not fly Quad copters within 3 miles of an airport.
  • You should not fly Quad copters for any commercial purpose.

Application of Quadcopters and Drones

Not rated yet

Some applications of the Quadcopters and Drones:

1. Research platform

Quadcopters accomplish extensive and intricate aerial maneuvers. A batch of quadcopters can do so much so as to float in mid-air and perform complex flying routines all by themselves. They even organize themselves to do group flips, shooting through hula hoops and fly through windows as a group. So the Quadcopters acts as a useful tool for university researchers to test and evaluate new ideas in a number of different fields, including flight control theory, navigation, real time systems and robotics.

The Quadcopters are available in many sizes, comparatively cheap, and have an uncomplicated mechanical design. And hence Quadcopters are used in ingenious test platforms.

The Quadcopter designs and schemas are the combined work of computer science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering specialists.

2. Military and law enforcement

Quadcopters are used for surveillance and inspection by military and law enforcement agencies. These unmanned machines are utilized for the search and rescue operations in urban environments.

One such example is Aeryon Scout, which is created by Canadian company Aeryon Labs. This Quadcopter functions as a miniature UAV to silently hover in place and the camera in the quadcopter observes people and objects on the ground.

3. Photography

Most Quadcopters are used for aerial imagery field. They are used for photographic various natures and places.

4. Journalism

Quadcopters are used for taking photos in the events of floods, protests, and wars, so they are very useful in reporting and verifying news on such events.

5. Art

Quadcopters are used in light shows. In performance art, they cater with new degrees of positional control over the use of lights, cameras, puppets, and characters.

6. Sport

Nowadays, quadcopters are used all over the world in racing and freestyle events. Quadcopters used in racing and freestyle are built with mechanisms incorporating speed and agility. Racing and freestyle drones are comparatively smaller in size, with 250mm between the propeller shafts and/or 5-6 inch props being the usually upper end of the size scale.
