UT Southwestern Reveals The Truth

In fact, UT Southwestern’s research team has identified a specific hormone that induces the desire to consume water.

Furthermore, this hormone acts in response to particular nutrient stresses that increase the chance of dehydration.

What Did The Research Team Find?

The Kliewer and Mangelsdorf lab has been in the forefront studying FGF21 or in other words, fibroblast growth factor.

In previous research, the team found that FGF21 functions through the brain’s pathway in mice.

In addition, this hormone suppresses the need for alcohol and sugar in favour of consuming water.

Important deductions from the research

  • According to Dr Kliewer, the consumption of sugar or alcohol stimulates the growth of FGF21.
  • Also, this hormone then visits a particular spot in the brain known as the hypothalamus to induce thirst.
  • Moreover, FGF21 operates via a new route that’s different from the usual renin-angiotensin-aldosterone.

What The Study On Mice Further Revealed?

In mice, this hormone managed hydration in reply to nutrient stress.

Also, in an experiment, the team discovered that both mice genetically incapable to manufacture FGF21 and normal mice drank the same amount of water.

However,  a fat carbohydrate ketogenic intake induced thirst in normal mice while the FGF21 disabled mice did not show any extra signs.

Therefore, these findings strengthened the hormone’s importance in the signalling route.

Another important discovery in this research talks about the hormone’s strong response in humans.

The Link Between FGF21 Hormone And The Human Body

In this experiment, 21 participants at the Graz Medical University in Austria were instructed to consume juice alone or a mix of juice and alcohol.

And, then, the team measured the FGF21 parameters. However, with regard to alcohol, FGF21 stayed at peak levels after two hours.

Finally, the researchers have concluded that FGF21 depends on a new circuit called as the β- adrenergic pathway.

According to Dr Kliewer, “We should concentrate more on hydration and how it affects metabolism” in general.

The Team Behind The Findings

The findings were announced by Dr Steven Kliewer and Dr David Mangelsdorf who run a lab at the prestigious UT Southwestern since 2002.

Dr Steven Kliewer

Steven Kliewer graduated in biochemistry in 1985 from the well-known Brown University. He later passed out of UCLA with a PhD in the complex field of molecular biology.

Since 2002, he works in UT Southwestern and currently holds the distinguished chair in Biology (Developmental).

Dr Kliewer along with Dr David Mangelsdorf now jointly run the lab at UT.

He earned his BS from Flagstaff’s Northern Arizona University in the year 1981.

Later on, David completed his PhD from Tucson’s Arizona University in 1987.

At present, Dr.David and Dr Steven are currently focused on metabolism’s nuclear receptor regulation at UT.

Co-authors also include several eminent personalities like Dr Ming Chang Hu, Dr Yang Xie etc.
